Jesuit Father Jacques L. Weber died on Aug. 17, 2014, in Houston, at the age of 94. He was a member of the Society of Jesus for 77 years and a priest for 65 years.
Fr. Weber was one the five Jesuit priests known as the Founding Fathers who opened Strake Jesuit College Preparatory in Houston in 1961.
Fr. Weber was born on Feb. 17, 1920, in New Orleans, where he was educated by the Redemptorist Fathers. In 1936, he entered the novitiate, following in the footsteps of his older brother, Harold. Fr. Weber did his regency, the second stage of a Jesuit’s formation, at Dallas Jesuit.
In the early days of “Houston Jesuit,” not only was Fr. Weber a mainstay in the classroom — especially as a Latin teacher — he also started the school’s speech and debate program. His students made their mark in tournaments in the very first academic year.
After his time at Strake Jesuit, Fr. Weber made a major contribution to the spiritual life of the city by co-founding the Adult Theology Center for the Diocese of Galveston-Houston. He remained involved in adult education for many years and served at St. Cecelia’s Parish.
