Fr. Michael Harter, SJ

Biography:

Born in Wichita, Kansas, Fr. Michael Harter, SJ, has been a Jesuit for 60 years, and has served in a range of ministries, primarily in communications and the formation of Jesuits.  

Father Harter served in a variety of communications-related ministries, including director of publications for the former Missouri Province, managing editor of America magazine and at Studio J Communications/Review for Religious, productions of the former Missouri Province. While he was the provincial assistant for communications for the Missouri Province, he produced Hearts on Fire, a book of prayer in the Ignatian tradition.  

Most recently, Fr. Harter joined the team at the Slavery, History, Memory and Reconciliation (SHMR) project, where he has worked as an image digitization assistant since 2019.

The prayers in this book are all composed by Jesuits who paraphrase and illustrate important aspects of the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius. Selected prayers are from saints, poets, theologians, and retreat directors such as Ignatius Loyola, Francis Xavier, Gerard Manley Hopkins, Anthony de Mello, Karl Rahner, Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, and many lesser-known but nonetheless memorable Jesuits.

The book has also been translated and published in Spanish, Italian, Indonesian, Polish, and Arabic.
