Father Lawrence Moore, SJ, celebrates his 60th Jesuit jubilee this year. He has served as a professor of law at Loyola University New Orleans since 1991.
A native of Kansas City, Missouri, Fr. Moore entered the former Missouri Province of the Society of Jesus at St. Stanislaus Seminary in Florissant, Missouri, in 1964. During his Jesuit formation, he earned a bachelor’s degree in philosophy and a master’s in urban affairs from Saint Louis University. While working at Regis Jesuit High School in Colorado from 1971 to 1974, he earned a teaching certification through Regis College in Denver. After completing his Master of Divinity at the Jesuit School of Theology at Berkeley in 1977, he was ordained a priest at St. Francis Xavier Church in Kansas City.
Following his priestly ordination, Fr. Moore completed a law degree from the University of Missouri-Kansas City Law School, where he was managing editor of the UMKC Law Review. He obtained a Master of Law (LLM) from New York University in 1982 and joined the faculty at Loyola University New Orleans that same year as a teacher of law. His areas of expertise include constitutional law, federal courts, and civil rights and procedure.
During his tenure at Loyola, he served as interim dean of the Law School from 2015 to 2017. Father Moore has also served as rector (1991-1996) and acting rector (2002, 2014-2015) of the Loyola University Jesuit community.
He professed his final vows in the Society of Jesus in 1990.
