House of Discernment Opens in Houston

August 29, 2025

The Jesuits USA Central and Southern Province has opened a new house of discernment for men considering a vocation to the Society of Jesus. Located in Houston, its purpose is to provide a space for serious candidates to discern whether God is calling them to religious life.

Fr. Juan Ruiz, SJ, a vocation promoter for the province, makes dinner to welcome discerners to the new Miguel Pro Discernment House in Houston.

Members of the Miguel Pro Discernment House community will have the opportunity to experience communal and apostolic life, with some spiritual formation. They will form an intentional community on their own, without a Jesuit living with them. A member of the vocation team will continue to accompany them, and they will visit other Jesuits living and serving in Houston. Located next to Cristo Rey Jesuit College Preparatory School, some of the candidates may serve at the school, though it is not a requirement.

The province covers the basic living expenses and provides a stipend so that the men are able to have a sense of community life. The house opened in August, with the members invited by the vocation team.

Please pray that the Light of Christ will guide the men who will live at Miguel Pro House, along with all men who are considering a Jesuit vocation.
