Belize is an integral part of the Jesuits USA Central and Southern Province, stemming back to 1893, when the Jesuit superior general asked the Jesuits of what was then the Missouri Province to work in British Honduras – now the country of Belize.
Serving the people of Belize is a fundamental part of the work we do in our province – not a mission, but an essential part of who we are. Many Jesuits have dedicated their lives to Belize, while others have served for shorter periods. But all have been touched by the warmth and generosity of the people and the beauty of the cultures and the country itself.
The people of Belize have great faith but limited resources. UNICEF reports that more than 40 percent of the population falls below the poverty rate, including more than half the children. That’s why we look to our generous donors from outside the country to contribute to our works in Belize. We have been blessed for many years to partner with Belize 2020, a grassroots organization committed to helping the people of Belize.
The Jesuit sponsored works in Belize include:
- John’s College in Belize City – both a high school and four-year university
- Martin de Porres Parish in Belize City
- Peter Claver Parish in the Toledo District
In addition, the Jesuits of Belize have a long history of providing pastoral care for Nuestra Señora de la Asuncion Parish on Caye Caulker and St. John Vianney Parish in Belize City and in the prisons in Belize City. More recently, a Jesuit regent has been working with the hospice in Belize City.
