DONATE NOW

As an alternative to donating cash, you can increase your tax savings by transferring appreciated property such as stock and mutual funds directly to the Jesuits USA Central and Southern Province. If you’ve owned the asset for more than one year, you avoid long-term capital gains tax and may deduct the full market value on your tax return. For wire transfer instructions to share with your broker, please contact Jason Scott Embry, Chief Advancement Officer, at jembry@jesuits.org or (314) 361-7765.

A donor-advised fund (DAF) is a charitable giving vehicle that allows you to make a tax-deductible donation today and then recommend gifts (known as grants) to the Jesuits USA Central and Southern Province and other IRS-qualified charities from the fund over time.

Please follow the instructions provided by your DAF regarding minimum contribution, the process for recommending grants, and any restrictions regarding pledge agreements.

Please go directly to your donor-advised fund’s website and choose the Jesuits USA Central and Southern Province as the charity of choice when directing a donation. Please also indicate which area you would like your gift to support: Greatest Need, Formation, Senior Care, Apostolic Ministries or other fund(s) where you want to help.

A gift of real estate can be donated as a current gift or a gift through your estate. Real estate gifts are ideal for funding a major gift such as an endowed scholarship or capital renovation. A residence, rental property, vacation home, or commercial or agricultural property may be contributed outright to the Jesuits USA Central and Southern Province or through various charitable trust arrangements.

You may receive a charitable income tax deduction for items of property such as art, book collections, computer equipment, maps or artifacts as long as it is used to further bolster the Jesuits USA Central and Southern Province’s mission-centric work and help Jesuits to continue to serve in their ministries, to be fully trained for service to the Church and to be cared for in their senior years. Gifts of intangible property such as patents, copyrights or royalties may also be accepted, as well as the sale of a business which leverages the company’s accumulated value. You may also wish to consider a gift of stock in a family business when selling your business or transferring it to family members.

It’s never too early to think about creating a future gift for the Jesuits USA Central and Southern Province. Anyone who has property and a family should have an estate plan. Including the Jesuits USA Central and Southern Province with a charitable gift may be an important part of that plan. Even modest-sized planned gifts make an enormous difference in the Province’s mission-centric work and help Jesuits to continue to serve in their ministries, to be fully trained for service to the Church and to be cared for in their senior years.

Estate Planning Checklist

When life changes, your estate plan should too. Have you recently celebrated the birth of a new child? Moved to a new home? Experienced a large financial windfall or loss? Changed relationship status? These are good reasons to review your estate plan with an underlying question: Does your plan meet your current goals and aspirations?

Please use this checklist to help you prepare, care for others and manage the distribution of your assets.

  • Review your will, checking for updates that may need to be made because of a change in your life or a beneficiary’s.
  • Consider the impact of any tax law changes or the decision to add a gift to the Jesuits USA Central and Southern Province.
  • Check that the executor or personal representative you’ve named is still the qualified individual you want to manage your estate, resolve claims, minimize taxes and distribute the designated portions to your beneficiaries.
  • Be sure you are comfortable with the guardian named in your will for those under your care. If your dependents were minor children who are now grown, does a guardian still need to be listed?
  • Look over beneficiaries designated for your insurance and retirement plans to make sure you haven’t named a now-deceased loved one or a former spouse.
  • Make sure the titles for your assets reflect your current circumstances and wishes, so they go to the people and organizations you intend.
  • Include a health care power of attorney to guide your family and health care providers when you are unable to make decisions for yourself.
  • Work with your estate planning attorney to make any updates.
  • Take the time to inform your beneficiaries of their status to avoid surprises later.
